I might be able to help.

I spent 15 yrs working as a computer programmer for a variety of military and civilian companies.
I specialised in ATE (automated test equipment) writing computer code to test, mainly GSM mobile phone handsets or base station equipment.
I quite often get asked by friends to fix their PC problems and so decided, why not set up a computer repair business,
So here I am.

One of the most common problems I see is advertising, my recommended fix for spam problems like this
is to download and install another browser, I recommend Firefox, Chrome or Opera.
There are others, some of them good too.

After that, I'd download and install Adblock.

Try uninstalling programs you no longer need, these can hog your resources like memory, slowing down your pc.
Look at defragmenting your hard drive, I recommend, Defraggler.
Install CCleaner.

Another thing you can do is install more memory, memory is quite cheap now, you might be able to get 1 or 2 Gigabytes for £5 from Amazon

If you want an alternative, maybe something a bit more secure, I recommend looking at Linux, I use several varieties at home, I have 3 PCs at home, they cost me £20 each.

Another common problem is an old machine that will not boot into windows, that has important data on it, like family photos, or letters etc.
I may be able to recover those by running a Linux Distribution Disc, this will allow me to boot your machine
into the linux operating system.
Don't worry about Windows Passwords, linux will just boot into Linux so no password is necessary.
Yes, if you thought having a Windows password gave you security, it does not.
If you've got data on a machine you'd like to recover, I may be ale to help.
If the machine is completely dead, maybe not, but you never know.
If it goes part way through the boot process then just fails, I might be able to get that data or family photos for you.

Puppy Linux which can be fairly secure, is generally very stable and comes with built in packages like web browsers, office software plus thousands of other apps.
You can do everything except high end gaming on Puppy Linux (not actually true it is possible but...)
Puppy Linux is Great if you have a fairly old machine, it's more efficient on resources than Windows so will
allow you to keep an old machine running you might otherwise have to upgrade or throw out.
Best of all, Puppy Linux is Free, as are most versions of Linux.

If you are very security concious, three military grade security distributions I sometimes use are, TOR, Tails and Liberte'.

I have a good, alround technical and science background.
